Minister insists Leichhardt Oval railing collapse is council’s problem
The new Minister for Sport believes the Leichhardt Oval stand collapsing is a “council issue”.
Investigations are now underway in the aftermath of a schoolboy rugby match at Leichhardt Oval after a safety rail gave way and sent spectators tumbling to the ground.
Those involved suffered many injuries and now the blame game has begun after earlier plans to overhaul the stadium were shelved.
NSW Sport Minister Alister Henskens told Mark Levy the responsibility lies with the Inner West Council.
“They have the responsibility for maintaining the ground and their attempt to try and deflect this under the state government is frankly completely irresponsible.
“They need to have a good look at themselves and look at their maintenance programs for the grounds.”
Mark Levy hit back stating that under the $250m agreement to upgrade the suburban ovals, $50m was set to be handed out to Leichhardt Oval as well.
Mark Levy: “Under the $250m agreement to upgrade suburban grounds Minister, was there not $50m pledged to Leichhardt Oval?
Alister Henskens: “On no universe that we operate in was that money ever going to do anything to the ground by last weekend when this incident occured.”
Mark believed the Minister was deflecting his question.
