Father fights for overhaul to P plate rule in wake of devastating deaths
There are calls for P plate drivers to be restricted in the number of passengers they can have.
Nigel Smith’s 18-year-old son died in a car crash in February.
Lachlan was a passenger of a driver on his red P plates.
Mr Smith has launched a petition to stop P platers driving with passengers for the first 12 months.
It comes after an 18-year-old driver was charged over a crash that killed five teenagers at Buxton.
The NSW government is in the process of beginning a review into data around P plate drivers.
Mr Smith told Ben Fordham the 12-month passenger restriction is in place in New Zealand.
“There will be exceptions to the rule … but when you’ve got a young driver with other young people, that’s just a recipe for disaster.”
