Do you know where your seafood comes from?
New technology developed in South Australia has the ability to track the source of seafood by testing bones, shells, and ocean temperatures, to detect seafood fraudulent labelling and get illegal fishing under control.
Bill Woods speaks with Dr Leonardo Guida, Shark Scientist, Marine Biologist & Conservationist, who says that accurate seafood labelling, particularly in terms of its source, can help us identify products from regions of the world where pollution like heavy metals and chemicals may be of concern.
“Over 70 percent of the seafood consumed in Australia is imported”, Dr Guida says.
“Traceability and accurate seafood labelling provides consumers with the information they need to make informed choices with the seafood they purchase.”
It’s crucial if the Australian government is to provide Aussie consumers with the confidence that the seafood they’re buying is backing-in local fishers who are environmentally responsible and fish sustainably”, Dr Guida says.
