NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb has revealed she may consider paying trainees amid reports new recruits are on the decline.

Currently, recruits at the NSW Police Academy aren’t paid while they train to become working officers.

The Daily Telegraph reports recruit numbers are dwindling as the number of officers leaving the force doubles.

Ms Webb told Mark Levy NSW Police has been in discussion with the union about paying trainees.

“We will certainly have to consider that if that becomes an issue.

“If we need another way to tackle recruitment, I won’t rule it out.”

But, the Commissioner maintains they still have lots of interest.

“We’ve still got great people wanting to join the police.”
