‘No excuses’: Former Socceroo condemns football fans’ ‘disgraceful’ behaviour
Stan Football commentator Mark Bosnich has condemned fans who appeared to perform Nazi salutes and booed the Welcome to Country during Saturday night’s Australia Cup final.
More than 16,000 fans attended the match at CommBank Stadium in Western Sydney, with A-league team Macarthur FC defeating Sydney United 58 2-0.
Fans continued to make noise and chant as Erin Wilkins stepped up to deliver the Welcome to Country. Eventually, those chants turned to boos.
Television cameras panned around the crowd and it showed some Sydney United 58 fans also performing Nazi salutes.
Sydney United 58, a semi-professional team that plays in the NSW NPL, was the first non A-League team to reach an Australia Cup final.
The former Socceroo told Ben Fordham the actions over the weekend have no place in football and in life.
“For that to occur it was wrong, quite simple,” he said.
“Weather it’s over done or not [Welcome to Country] there shouldn’t be any excuses.”
Bosnich also suggested that the Nazi salutes may have been influenced by the Croatian ultra fans.
Sydney United 58 were formerly known as Sydney Croatia.
“[The Nazi salute] is illegal in Croatia and should be illegal in life full stop.”
“It should be completely eradicated.”
