The Mornington Peninsula Shire Council will consider integrating nature rights into its planning processes.

Councillor Debra Mar is pushing for a new framework considering the legal rights of nature.

She says the Council’s existing policies are not doing enough to protect the region’s ecosystems.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Anthony Marsh told Ray Hadley he was surprised with where the idea came from.

“Often councillors’ votes are interesting, but we didn’t expect this to come from a Liberal Party member.”
