A man will appear in court today over the alleged attempted murder of a police officer in the state’s far north.

The male sergeant from Tweed/Byron Police District was patrolling at Murwillumbah when he noticed a man and an injured woman walking along yesterday afternoon.

After stopping to check on the woman’s welfare, the officer conducted checks on the man, which revealed the 33-year-old Queenslander had an outstanding warrant.

When the officer returned to arrest him, the man allegedly ran towards a nearby creek.

Police will allege that during the struggle, the man forcibly held the officer’s head underwater.

A member of the public intervened, freed the officer and helped restrain the man.

The 33-year-old has been refused bail to appear in court today.
