How to protect yourself from scams
CommBank is sharing its advice as more and more Australians are targeted by the duplicitous practice.
“Stop, check and reject every suspicious message” is advice from CBA’s Group Fraud Management Services General Manager James Roberts.
Mr Roberts told Deborah Knight that scams are on the rise all over the world because scammers are leveraging technology to facilitate scams on a large scale.
There are many types of scams and each one has different red flags making it difficult to spot the warning signs according to Mr Roberts.
“If you are talking generally then unsolicited contact or things you didn’t ask anyone to do could be a warning sign. That can be a message or phone call out of the blue, usually with some form of time urgency or pressure to make you do something you ordinarily wouldn’t do.
“We need to learn it is okay to say no and hang up,” Mr Roberts said.
If you do think you’ve been victim of a scam, Mr Roberts encourages you to contact your bank who might be able to help if you contact them soon.
