Can your boss force you to take leave?
As we approach the holiday season, many businesses will close for a period or will have limited staff rostered on for work. With that, there’s an expectation from most employers that staff will be on leave, whether they like it or not.
But what if you have leave accrued that you’re hoping to use for an extended break or an overseas trip? Or you want to take leave when airfares are much cheaper? Can your boss force you to take leave? And if so, what is a reasonable request from an employer?
Bill Woods speaks with Employment Lawyer, Nick Marouchak, who says employers can force award-free employees to take annual leave, but only if it’s reasonable.
He explains what reasonable means in the eyes of the law and offers some advice to workers is you feel your bosses demand to take leave is unreasonable.
