Young drivers in regional NSW will be given a cash incentive to help them buy a newer, safer vehicle under a state-first program by the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government.

Premier Dominic Perrottet stated that the program aims to promote the use of safer cars among young people, ultimately reducing fatalities in rural areas.

Paul Toole, Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW and Police, acknowledged that young drivers tend to inherit or buy older, cheaper, and less safe vehicles as their first car.

Paul Toole joined Chris O’Keefe to argue why they want to implement this program, and what their goal is.

A lot of young people “don’t have the opportunity to use public transport,” due to some communities not having a train network, Deputy Premier Toole said.

“It’s not only to protect them but also make sure that other motorists and passengers in these vehicles are actually protected.”

The program will initially test a group of up to 50 young individuals in specific locations and subsequently expand in stages to cover all regional areas throughout the state.
