Why Australia’s purchase of nuclear-powered submarines is significant
A Defence and Foreign policy expert told Deborah Knight that the AUKUS submarine deal is necessary to deter China.
The presence of nuclear-powered submarines will serve as a deterrent against potential foreign threats.
Peter Jennings says that the biggest risk comes from China in the next three to five years due to them wanting to become the dominant player in the world.
“The interim solution is a partial fix to get more American ships operating out of Australia’s naval basis in a few years’ time, 2027 seems to be the start date for that,” Mr Jennings said.
“Then the arrival of Virginia class boats to be operated by the Australian Navy, that’s faster than anything can be designed and built.”
