‘Humongous’ sun shines on Madama Butterfly
Sit under the stars and marvel at the giant sun on the set of the Handa Opera production of Madama Butterfly that opens this weekend.
Opera Australia principal baritone Michael Honeyman said the set for Madama Butterfly was simple but the scale was “humongous”.
“It is one of the biggest sets I’ve ever had to play on,” Honeyman said.
“The sun and moon quite are big features in the second half and they are spectacular.”
Honeyman, who was also in the 2014 cast and returns in 2023 in the role of Sharpless, in this unfolding tragedy of unrequited love.
The critically acclaimed Madama Butterfly returns to the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour stage from March 24 –23 April 23. See it, under the stars, with fireworks every night as well as pop up bars and eateries, on the Fleet Steps, Mrs Macquaries Point. Tickets: opera.org.au
