John Sattler honoured by South Sydney stalwarts
Mark Levy and Shane Flanagan have paid tribute to the late South Sydney legend John Sattler on Wide World of Sports.
South Sydney chairman Nick Pappas joined them to them to honour Sattler, recalling him as the “legend of legends”.
“He stands tall, he stands up above the rest of us,” he said.
“He was tough and uncompromising on the field as he described, but he was eloquent and measured at the same time off the field and he was that unique blend and that that really set him apart from everyone else.”
Former South Sydney coach Michael Maguire also joined Wide World of Sports to speak about the influence Sattler had on his 2014 NRL premiership-winning campaign.
“John always had a saying I played to win,” Maguire said.
He also spoke of Sattler’s reputation on the field.
“We talk about John’s toughness, toughness playing that grand final with the broken jaw in 1970,” Maguire said.
“And Sam Burgess in that grand final did the exact same thing with that broken cheekbone.”
