Speedway in Australia undergoing a renaissance
When I was in my early teens in the late 50’s I used to ride my pushbike from
Epping to Westmead to the Speedway, now the sight of Westmead Hospital. It
was by today standards a pretty rough old facility, but the racing was fast and
furious with minimal safety standards, so too the Speedway Royale at the Sydney
Showground. Here, Saturday night drew a regular crowd of 30,000 to some of the
most exciting racing in the country. Speedway Royale had closed by 1996 and
Speedway took somewhat of a back seat. Parramatta Speedway filled a gap, but it
wasn’t until the Government funded new Eastern Creek Speedway that Sydney
got a world class arena. Today, speedway is back on the menu and growing and
now a multi-million dollar business. Next meeting at Eastern Creek Saturday April
15. Take the kids, it really is an exciting night out. I’m David Berthon
