‘Naive at the time’: Influencer’s DIY orthodontics goes wrong
Instagram influencer, Liz Claire, believes she is a victim of an online dental company scam, after using the aligner trays they sent her.
“They said that there were orthodontists working with them behind the scenes, but I was only in contact with customer service,” Liz told Michael McLaren.
“After 9 months a real orthodontist told me that I had more of an overbite than I used to.”
Australian Dental Association of NSW Vice President, Dominic Aquad, says Liz is not alone, as DIY orthodontics and teeth whitening is trending on social media.
“There are really unrealistic beauty standards being promoted on social media and people are trying to reach them by doing dangerous things,” he said.
The dental company that Liz claims she is a victim of, stated that “Liz did not complete her the full orthodontist recommended treatment”.
“Our aligners move the teeth no more than 0.5mm per aligner, which is safe and standard across the dental industry,” the statement reads.
