‘Two names for one student’: Teachers get pronouns lesson
A leaked email has revealed potential new rules for Queensland teachers; who may be required to use not one, but two names for their students.
If a student changes their gender or pronouns, teachers must call them by their preferred name, but will have to use their birth name when speaking to parents, in case they are unaware of their child’s gender change.
A teacher has tipped off the Courier Mail newspaper, saying, “Staff are now expected to talk to the parents and not mention it…They must use the name on the child’s birth certificate.”
The teacher revealed that if a child wants to change subjects at school, several signatures are required, but to change pronouns, it’s a case of “speaking to the guidance officer”.
