Labor’s immigration policy conducted by stealth
Luke is joined by Nick Cater, Senior fellow at the Menzies Research Centre & columnist with the Australian, to discuss his latest article that focuses on the issue of population in Australia, particularly regarding the public’s views on immigration.
A recent poll by the Australian Population Research Institute found that only 18% of Australians want immigration to return to its old level, while 70% want it reduced, with 82% of respondents believing immigration leads to higher housing prices.
These concerns are supported by statistics that show an increase in available homes in Australia, while 2.2 million migrants arrived in the same period.
In line with this sentiment, a new survey reveals that around 60% of Australians believe there should be a pause in the intake of new migrants until more infrastructure such as hospitals, roads, and houses is built, with a think tank estimating the country could face a housing shortage of more than 180,000 homes.
