‘Balancing Act’: Rural Fire Commissioner discusses controlled burns

Article image for ‘Balancing Act’: Rural Fire Commissioner discusses controlled burns

The NSW Rural Fire Services Commissioner, Rob Rogers has discussed the necessary hazard reduction burning following concerns of El Niño returning.

In the past year, rural fire services have only been able to do 20 per cent of the planned controlled burns, as a result of wet weather conditions.

Rogers described the difficulties encountered, stating, “It’s either too wet, too dry, too windy, too still… [it is] a bit of a Goldilocks thing”.

“It’s a balancing act that fire authorities have to manage each day”, he explained.

He emphasised the importance of prioritising areas that were unaffected by the 2019 bushfires.
