‘Statistically flawed numbers’: Independent statistician challenges brumby count
Independent biostatistician, Claire Galea, has expressed concerns regarding the recent brumby population figures in New South Wales, questioning the validity of the methodology, particularly in the context of ongoing discussions about aerial shooting.
Galea explained that kangaroo and wallaroo modelling needs a minimum of 60-80 clusters of animals to ensure the credibility of any efforts.
She pointed out that a similar methodology used for assessing brumby populations appears to have combined clusters in order to meet the minimum quantity.
“There’s no imagery… we don’t know if [the horses are double-counted]”, Galea exclaimed.
‘There needs to be video footage… we need evidence… an independent investigation and a recount of these wild horses”.
