Free payphones provide a lifeline for Australians in need

Clinton Maynard

Payphones have become a familiar sight on streets nationwide.  But while many of us may walk past without giving them much thought, for Australians going through tough times, they provide a vital service.

Luke is joined by Teresa Corbin, Chief Customer Advocate at Telstra, who reveals that since the introduction of free calls in August 2021, there have been a staggering over 40 million calls made.

More than 250,000 calls made to emergency services and key increases to critical helplines like Triple Zero, Lifeline, Centrelink and more in the last 12 months.

Ms Corbin says payphones are more than just a way to make a call. For vulnerable Australians, they are a lifeline.  They not only offer an essential connection with family and friends, but they provide a link to critical helplines, with this importance growing more and more each year.

Telstra is committed to helping keep one million Australians in vulnerable circumstances stay connected every year. For Australians who are currently facing a challenging circumstance, resources to help them through difficult times can be found.
