Scientists want to see Australian farmers grow lesser-known crop species, to aid with food security here and across the globe.

Rice, maize and wheat dominate the country’s agricultural system.

Researchers from the University of Western Australia say that should be diversified with greater production of ‘under-utilised’ species including taro, elephant foot yam and other resilient and nutritious crops.

Rural reporter Madelaine McNeill caught up with the University’s Institute of Agriculture Director Professor Kadambot Siddique to find out how this could benefit farmers, and the world.
