Universities have become over reliant on foreign students

clinton maynard

Clinton Maynard is joined by Leith Van Onselen, Chief Economist at the MB Fund and MB Super / Co-founder of MacroBusiness, about what he describes as greedy universities feasting on an international student ponzi.

The head of the University of Sydney says that the institution has allocated its record earnings from international students to a future fund for safeguarding against potential economic downturns while emphasizing the need to address the nation’s increasing dependence on fees from foreign students.

In 2022, international students contributed 78% of Sydney University’s student fee revenue and 48% of its overall revenue, surpassing any other Australian university by earning over $1.4 billion in fees last year.

In comparison, its closest competitor in New South Wales, the University of NSW, received about $700 million less from foreign students in the same period.
