Growing road toll in NSW and Victoria a major concern

David Berthon

Reviewing the road toll in NSW and Victoria in 2023 – In NSW there were 351
fatalities, up 63 on the year before. In Victoria, 296 lives were lost, the worst toll since
2008. Post Covid there are a lot more cars on the road. In the double demerit period
between 22 December and January 1, NSW Police report there were 8069
speed infringements, 631 drink driving offences, and 1374 drug driving violations.
Quite clearly, the speed camera operation in both NSW and Victoria is having
little impact on road safety apart from raising a lot of money – revenue raising
has overtaken visual policing, when was the last time you actually saw a police
patrol car on the prowl? Drug driving in particular continues to grow at an
alarming rate. It’s clearly time a totally new strategy was developed to arrest the
increase in road deaths.
