Road safety forum announced to address rise in fatalities in 2023

David Berthon

Good news this week, the announcement of a national road safety forum to
tackle the rising national road toll which lifted last year by 7.3 per cent compared
to 2022. The National Road Safety Conference will take place in Sydney on
Thursday February 22 and involve experts on road safety from across Australia
and the world. A particular focus will be on regional road deaths with fatalities in
country areas over-represented. According to N.S.W Regional Roads Minister
Jenny Atchison, while one third of the state’s population lives in regional areas,
over two thirds of fatalities, or 70 percent, occur on regional roads. The
conference, which should be an annual event, will be hosted by the N.S.W.
Government and hear from victims, academics, and stakeholders from federal
and state organisations. With around 450,000 more cars on our roads since 2019
one hopes the forum will also target driver education.
