Subaru’s new Impreza hatch – new body more technology and safety comes at a price

David Berthon

Driving the new Subaru Impreza all-wheel-drive hatch today – the first new model in seven years with a new body and interior– three models, the L, the R and the S. I drove the top-spec 2.0-litre S at $42,133 drive-away taking the Impreza into dearer territory however one has to remember it is all-wheel-drive against most competitors that are front drive only. The 2.0-litre boxer engine, a carryover, is no fire breather although a new CVT or continuously variable automatic transmission with manual shift paddles really helps. But this new Subaru Impreza is 60 kilos heavier, and it reflects in sluggish low-speed engine response with maximum torque not reached until 4000 revs. Not exactly fuel efficient either with the need to use more throttle when the road conditions demand it – I managed a rather high 9.9L/100km with mainly city driving but at least it consumes regular 91 octane fuel. The suspension is tuned for ride over handling, and it is extremely comfortable over a spread of road surfaces – something my wife noticed in particular – all wheel drive also giving the Impreza an assuredness on-road particularly in the wet. But this Subaru Impreza S hatch, whilst featuring a swag of new comfort, convenience and safety equipment, is not inexpensive.
