Two people are dead following a horrific seven-vehicle crash on the Newell Highway, north of Dubbo.

The accident occurred at midday when a semi-trailer slammed into four cars, a truck and a ute while they were stopped at roadworks.

A teenager was trapped for three hours under a truck, with his survival labelled a “miracle” by emergency services.

Commander of the Orana Mid-Western Police District, Superintendent Peter McKenna, was one of the first on the scene and tells Steve Price it was “like a war zone”.

“You’d think it was something out of a movie but unfortunately it was very real.

“That is the worst I’ve seen someone actually completely enveloped and entrapped in that situation. To survive that was nothing short of a miracle.

“If you saw it, you’d think there’s no way anyone could survive.”

Mr McKenna has pleaded with drivers to plan their trips carefully and heed road signs.

“There was plenty of signage and plenty of notice that the roadworks were there.

“Don’t speed. Don’t drive recklessly and think of other road users because two innocent people didn’t come home yesterday and that is an absolute tragedy.”
