Should children as young as 12 get behind the wheel?
Member for Coffs Harbour Andrew Fraser has called for year 7 students to be taught how to drive.
The proposal comes after a horror summer on NSW roads, with the toll being at its highest since 2014.
Mr Fraser tells Ben Fordham the cost of teaching young people how to drive is a small price to pay when it comes to saving lives.
“We teach our children how to cook but we don’t teach them how to drive.
“There’s not many people [who] die of their own cooking.”
He says road trauma costs billions of dollars a year whereas a pilot program in ten schools would cost around $100,000 a year, an investment which could save lives.
“It teaches them the road rules. It teaches them skills they will have for life.”
