Labor MP David Feeney has resigned from his seat in parliament following the status of his dual citizenship.

Mr Feeney released a statement on Thursday afternoon.

“With respect to my British renunciation… I have been unable to locate the required notice of renunciation.

“The material that has been located to date is insufficient to satisfy the High Court that I did indeed renounce my rights ten years ago. I am unable to disprove that I am a dual citizen.

“On this basis… I have today written to the Speaker of the House of Representatives resigning as an MP effective immediately.

Mr Feeney’s resignation triggers a by-election in his electorate of Batman in Victoria, a marginal seat which could fall to the Greens.

He says he will not seek preselection at the by-election.

The dual citizenship saga isn’t the only news coming out of Canberra.

Senior Labor MP, Tony Burke, is in hot water after allegedly accepting a $30,000 donation from a Chinese businessman before the last election.

Laura Parr, Macquarie Media’s political reporter, tells Chris Smith more.

“The thing to note here is [the businessman] is allegedly named in a secret intelligence brief as having links to the Chinese Communist Party.

“He himself says this isn’t true.”
