A university professor is in a fight for his career as well as for free academic speech after being censored for questioning climate science.

Peter Ridd is a professor at the College of Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research at James Cook University.

He specialises in coastal oceanography, particularly the state of the Great Barrier Reef, where he has worked for 35 years.

JCU has now found Professor Ridd guilty of “serious misconduct”, ­including denigrating a co-worker, denigrating the university, breaching confidentiality, publishing information outside of the university and disregarding his obligations as an employee.

It all follows controversial comments made by Professor Ridd, where he suggested the reef is in perfect health, telling Alan Jones fears it is dying are a beat up by climate scientists.

“The basic problem is that we can no longer trust the scientific ­organisations.”

Now Professor Ridd is in the Federal Court, fighting his censure order and accusing the university of accessing his private emails in a bid to have him sacked.
