The Environmental Protection Authority could be investigated after being accused of enabling illegal dumping.

The transport of waste, landfill practices and illegal dumping have been investigated by a Parliamentary inquiry after the EPA’s director of waste management Steve Beaman was secretly recorded joking about swapping New South Wales rubbish for Queensland Mangoes – and mocking the state’s waste tracking system.

Ray Hadley has obtained a leaked copy of the inquiries recommendations which include:

• The NSW Government allocate immediate additional resources to support policing of illegal dumping
• The NSW EPA strengthen liaison with NSW police when it comes to illegal activity in the waste sector, with formal protocols made public
• The NSW Government amend the Protection of the Environmental Administration Act to provide the appointment of a Chairman, independent of the CEO of NSW EPA
• The NSW Government conduct an independent review of the NSW EPA
• Establish an independent inquiry to investigate the operation and regulation of the Mangrove Mountain landfill site
• The authority immediately increase the use of vehicle trackers to prevent illegal dumping
• Make it an offence to exhume waste from landfill sites
• An immediate restructure of the EPA

The report is due to be made public this afternoon.
