The festivities of Easter get underway today. For most of us that signals a fairly long break from work, some good food and plenty of chocolate.

But for police, Easter isn’t a fun and games affair.

Operation Merrett  started at midnight this morning and will go on until 11:59pm on Monday April 2, 2018.

It is being described as an “unorthodox” and “proactive” approach to road policing, with its aim to educate and empower the public to make the right decision on our roads.

“There are more vehicles on the NSW road network over holiday periods and sadly that results in some road users speeding, drink or drug driving, not wearing a seat belt, driver distraction and driver fatigue,” said Chief Inspector Phil Brooks.

“We’ve got Operation Merrett set up right throughout the NSW road network. This is given the very sad and tragic spike we’ve had in road tolls.”

95 people have lost their lives so far this year on NSW roads.

“We’re encouraging our police to pull people over and have that chat with them on their long drive,” said the Chief Inspector.

“We want to ensure drivers stop every two hours, rest, refresh and then hopefully continue their journey safely.”

Double demerits have also come into effect this morning and will continue to Monday.

“They will apply for speeding, not wearing a seatbelt or a proper helmet and those who are on their phones.”
