Wallabies star Israel Folau has escaped disciplinary action after comments he made about the gay community on social media.

The devout Christian posted on Instagram saying gay people would be destined for “hell” if they don’t “repent of their sins.”

Today Folau was hauled before Rugby Australia bosses, who’ve since said he hasn’t been reprimanded but has been reminded his use of social media needs to be “respectful”.

Anglican Archbishop of Sydney Glenn Davies tells Ben Fordham he’ll strongly support Folau’s freedom of speech.

“Izzy is an Australian and I believe that all Australians have the right to freedom of speech, freedom of conscience and freedom of religion.

“I think this is an attack upon him and his right to express his mind.

“They need to be respectful too of their players and of their players’ rights to have their own beliefs.”

As to whether he would give Folau any advice, the Archbishop says he would counsel him to pause before posting.

“I would say, always think twice before you write on in social media.”
