Suzuki’s Swift has been a popular light car on the Australian market for a long time – a lightweight sporty hatch which was somewhat light and flimsy. The Swift since then has developed into a much more polished and torsionally rigid small hatch, today making up 43 per cent of Suzuki sales. Earlier this year Suzuki Aust. gave us a new third-generation Suzuki Sport model – $25,490 in six speed manual, $27,490 in six-speed auto – I drove both – a very entertaining and lively small car the latest Sport gets a larger 1.4-litre turbo engine and its very punchy with very strong mid- range torque – with a lower and wider stance to the standard Swift it looks more polished than a boy racer – tastefully targeted at a market that likes its motoring to offer more of a sports edge. With five star safety the Suzuki Sport is not cheap and it’s a buzz box in terms of noise suppression but it does offer a very satisfying sporty drive. I’m David Berthon
