A council in Sydney’ inner west is considering a crackdown on foreign languages on shopfront signs.

Strathfield Independent Councillor Matthew Blackmore has tabled the proposed rules which would ensure foreign languages only take up 30% of shopfront signage.

With more than two-thirds of people in Strathfield speaking a language other than English, local business owners are asking why they need to change their signs.

Western Sydney Director of Sydney Business Chamber David Borger tells Ben Fordham having more English signage wouldn’t be bad for business.

“I think businesses that don’t advertise in English are probably threading themselves off from an important market.

“Let’s face it, there’s not many cuisines we don’t all like, so I think it’s fair and reasonable to have some English signage.”
