Suspended drunk driver says we need stronger penalties
Ray Hadley has been campaigning for tougher sentencing on repeat traffic offenders.
He’s persistently called on Premier Berejiklian and Roads Minister Melinda Pavey to legislate tougher penalties to stop suspended drivers from getting back behind the wheel.
Today, listener Alex phoned in and told Ray, “strong sentencing was a good thing” for him.
Between the ages of 18 and 21, Alex was done for drinking driving three times, losing his license for nine years.
He tells Ray at the end of the sentencing, the judge gave him a firm warning.
“He said, if I see you again, don’t forget to pack your toothbrush.
“I can tell you, it was certainly a very good deterrent to never do anything again.”
Alex tells Ray the stronger penalties won’t work for everyone, but they’re still necessary.
“There’s always going to be people in society that will never be deterred no matter what you do to them.
“I don’t think the laws necessarily apply to them, I think they apply to the person who has two cents between their ears.”
