MP in hot water over swimwear comment
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week has kicked off today but it’s not the frocks that are dominating the conversation.
State Liberal MP Jonathan O’Dea is in hot water this afternoon for making an off-the-cuff comment.
Mr O’Dea was asked by a journalist what part of the event he was most excited to see.
“I’m most excited about seeing the event that’s coming up after this morning which is around swimwear,” he told the journalist.
“I haven’t chosen that specifically, but as a male it’s always nice to see swimwear.”
Labor MP Jenny Aitchison quickly took aim at Mr O’Dea on Twitter, saying his comment was “completely inappropriate” and hashtagging “mansplain”.
Completely inappropriate comment from a Liberal MP. This is the bloke who tried to shut me down on IWD in a private members statement about the impact of the government’s failure to address Domestic Violence in my electorate. #mansplain #nswpol pic.twitter.com/pI9t2cXFRZ

Ben Fordham is calling out the backlash against Mr O’Dea, asking whether we’d be similarly outraged if a female MP said they were excited to see the men’s swimwear event.
“Do you reckon we’d all be having a laugh? Or would we be tut-tutting like Jenny Aitchison this afternoon?
“It just goes to show you can’t afford to have fun in politics.”
