Claims of dodgy debt recovery tactics by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) will be the subject of a new investigation.

The ATO is accused of over-using garnishee notices to claw back revenue from vulnerable businesses and individuals.

Inspector-General of Taxation Ali Noroozi says he’ll be examining whether the practice is used appropriately.

Speaking with Ross Greenwood, he says the issue needs to be “addressed immediately”.

“We need to investigate them, we owe it to the public, they need to know whether there is an issue or not.”

If you have had experience with garnishee notices, you can submit or feedback here or by calling 1300 448 829.
