Second rail contractor sues but Transport Minister backs “congestion-busting” promise
The headaches have continued for the state government, with a second contractor now suing over the construction of Sydney’s Light Rail project.
The action comes after Premier Gladys Berejiklian appealed for the public to give them 18 more months to fix Sydney’s congestion chaos.
Queensland-based company VAC Group has now launched proceedings in the Federal Court for $6 million, accusing the state of misleading conduct.
Spanish subcontractor ACCIONA launched similar proceedings last month for more than $1 billion.
Despite the legal setbacks, Andrew Constance Transport Minister is confident next year will be a success.
“Unfortunately, the light rail project… there’s some challenges there.
“I have every confidence we can put the pressure on and make 2019 one of the biggest years in terms of congestion-busting for the state.”
Minsiter Constance says the government will be seeking to have ACCIONA’s “ludicrous” $1.2 billion Supreme Court claim struck out.
“Let’s get back to the contract and let’s get on with the job so that those businesses, and certainly those residents, are no longer affected.
“We know they’ve got the capability, we want them to get on with it.”
