Descendant of David Jones pays tribute on momentous milestone
David Jones is celebrating its 180th birthday, making it the oldest department store in the world.
Stores around the country will be toasting champagne this afternoon over a slice of cake.
The iconic and historic retailer opened on this day in 1838 on the corner of George Street and Barrack Lane in Sydney.
Originally from Wales, David Jones first came to Tasmania to open a store for someone else, with his wife and six children in tow.
DJ’s Great great grand-daughter Susanna De Vienne has told Chris Smith it was actually her grand-father who created the atmosphere in David Jones everyone enjoys today.
“He wanted everyone to remember it as an event – a day out – you didn’t have to buy anything, but you could have a cup of tea or you could just walk around”.
All customers can snag a 20% discount in honor of David Jones’s birthday.
