This Chiko Roll creation is still rolling for charity 30 years on
Vintage car lovers are busy rigging up their prized possessions, gearing up for the longest running charity motoring event in Australia.
The Variety Bash was born over 30 years ago and is a chance for die-hard motorists to explore outback Australia and raise money for sick kids at the same time.
One man has been involved since 1989 and his 1964 Wolseley 24/80 is a cut above the rest, featuring a large fibreglass Chiko Roll on its roof.
Veteran Variety Basher John Lindsell tells Michael McLaren his precious Wolseley has done a least a few hundred thousand kilometres and is ready to go again next month.
“You become addicted, I’m afraid. I’ve been very, very fortunate to have been able to do so many.”
The Bathurst-born car enthusiast says exploring the outback is part of the fun, but putting smiles on the faces of sick children is the real reward.
“To be able to participate in the activity at the schools and other stops… it’s a very rewarding thing. And it’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to it.”
This year’s NSW Variety Bash gets underway on Sunday, August 12 in Bonnyrigg.
Queensland’s adventure begins in Gladstone on Wednesday, August 22.
