Labor won’t lock fishers out of proposed marine parks, Opposition Leader says
NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley says Labor won’t lock recreational fishers out of protected marine areas.
Earlier this month, the state government announced plans to create 25 biodiversity marine parks along the stretch of coastline between Newcastle and Wollongong.
News of the proposal sparked outrage, with listeners of the Ray Hadley Morning program to flood the open line in frustration.
The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party say Labor assured them it would scrap the parks altogether if elected.
But Labor leader Luke Foley tells Ray Hadley he’s committed to making the parks “multi-use” and won’t be locking out fishermen.
“We’re committed to a multi-use marine park and I stress multi-use.
“We’ve no plans for locking out recreational fishers, and indeed Ray I make this commitment that any new restrictions under a Labor government led by me would only come by consensus.”
