The saga that is Sydney’s light rail project continues to wage war on local businesses.

The state government originally promised the project would be finished in 2019 and cost $1.6 billion.

“Here we are three years after construction began and there’s been a half a billion dollar blow out,” says Chris Smith.

“The main contractor is now telling the government the new completion date is early 2020.

“Not to mention the mess the government’s been in with contractor’s stopping work and they themselves threatening legal action.”

More than 80 local businesses impacted by the disruption is joining a class action seeking tens of millions in compensation.

“They can’t scream loud enough, their businesses are dying, their staff’s health have been affected and there’s been no real compensation for them,” says Chris.

Rick Mitry from Mitry Lawyers is leading one of the class actions and tells Chris “not only are their businesses destroyed but their confidence has been destroyed”.

“Some of them have lost hope and you can’t help but think they really do need to seek psychiatric help.”
