Airport security could reach new heights if new facial recognition technology is rolled out in Australian airports.

The Home Affairs Department is considering new technology that uses facial recognition to identify troubled passengers, including sex traffickers and people with terror links.

The new technology would see the faces of people walking through terminals captured, with software then used to scan social media profiles, no-fly lists and criminal databases.

Any red flags would then be raised with airport security.

Counter-terrorism expert Doctor Clarke Jones tells Luke Grant this would be a “positive” move for airport security.

“I can see where people’s concerns are, in relation to racial profiling and that sort of thing.

“In reality, everyone should be scanned and people traveling should feel secure.

“I see this as a positive thing for airport security.”
