Tony Abbott says scrapping tampon tax is ‘a step in the right direction’
The controversial tampon tax will be axed from January 1 after Treasurers unanimously agreed to exempt feminine hygiene products from the GST.
It comes after an 18-year campaign which began when the tax was first introduced in 2000.
The 10 per cent tax on tampons and pads has long been described as unfair because male products including condoms and Viagra are exempt.
But Ben Fordham is asking if the decision to abolish the tax has opened a can of worms.
“Let’s hope not,” says former prime minister Tony Abbott.
“I’m all in favour of cutting tax as you know, Ben. My government was certainly into abolishing taxes.”
The Member for Warringah says “it wouldn’t have been my first priority”, but “it’s a step in the right direction”.
“I dare say you could go down the list and find a whole lot of things that arguably shouldn’t be taxed but are.
“But look, I certainly take the point that it’s better to have less tax than more tax.”

Mr Abbott also took the opportunity to take a jab at his successor.
When asked about an image of Malcolm Turnbull donned in lycra for an afternoon bike ride (see below), Mr Abbott says Mr Turnbull “sometimes had a bit of a problem keeping up” when they rode together.
“That’s the scoop for you, Ben.”
