A Sydney Councillor says many families are being priced out of enjoying the annual firework display.

15 vantage points owned by the state government will only be accessible if you hold a ticket – more than ever before.

“It’s a pretty rotten deal, isn’t it?” Councillor Linda Scott asked Mark Levy. “New Year’s Eve … should be free, it should be fun and it should be fair.

“It’s not reasonable to expect a family of four to pay up to be paying up to $600 to sit in a piece public space we paid our taxes on something like New Year’s Eve.”

Ms Scott said while she understands social distancing is still necessary, there’s other ways the tickets could have been allocated.

“We could have a raffle, we could give all the tickets to our nurses and our garbos and our other frontline staff who have worked so hard to help us all get through this horrible pandemic.

“Charging a price, and a particularly high price that is pretty unaffordable for most Sydney families, should not be the way the state government expects us to get through New Year’s Eve.”
