The launch of a huge nationwide coin hunt is paying tribute to the Aussie icons we’ve come to know and love.

The Great Aussie Coin Hunt has people around the country searching for 26 limited edition $1 coins, each representing a different letter of the alphabet.

Just some of the great icons include Z for Zooper Dooper, N for Neighbours, V for Vegemite and I for Iced Vovo.

Launched by Australia Post in conjunction with the Royal Australian Mint, the coins will be released gradually over the next four weeks.

The first of the coins have gone into circulation today, and are available directly from 3,600 participating Australia Post Offices around the country.

Australia Post Executive General Manager Nicole Sheffield tells Karl Stefanovic there was significant debate over which famous Aussie icons to include.

“The reality is there are a lot more than 26 icons of this country!

“We came up with a shortlist and then researched from collectors, the community, the customers, the Royal Australian Mint.

“This was the 26 that actually researched the most popular and the ones that actually resonated as icons.”
