‘An authentic Australian’: John Howard pays tribute to his former deputy Tim Fischer
Former prime minister John Howard has paid tribute to his former deputy Tim Fischer, after he passed away at the age of 73.
The former National Party leader and deputy prime minister had been battling leukaemia and passed away peacefully on Wednesday night.
John Howard tells Ben Fordham it’s an incredibly sad day for our country.
“Tim was an authentic Australian in so many different ways. To me, he was a wonderful political ally.
“He punched hard for the bush but he also understood that we were all in this together for the whole country and I’ll always remember him with great affection.”
He says Mr Fischer played a pivotal role in introducing strict gun laws after the Port Arthur massacre.
“We would never have successfully battened down those laws without the understanding of Tim Fischer.”
