Anzac Day tribute: The legacy of the Montevideo Maru following discovery

The shipwreck of the Montevideo Maru, the maritime disaster that killed more Australians than any other in World War II, has been found more than 80 years on.

The Montevideo Maru was found more than 4000 metres below the surface of the ocean, off the coast of the Philippines.

Kim Beazley, nephew to Syd Beazley who was aboard the ship in 1942, and former leader of the Labor Party told Deborah Knight that the discovery is a “wonderful gift” before Anzac Day.

“I think we’re expecting at least 10 to 15,000 for the dawn service,” said Mr Beazley.
