This year’s NAPLAN results show more Australian students are failing to meet the minimum literacy and numeracy standards.

Nearly a quarter of boys did not meet the required standards expected in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy.

Dr Kevin Donnelly, Senior Research Fellow at Australian Catholic University, says the picture is “bleak”.

“Our students are underperforming and it’s been a problem for a long time.

“Instead of this cultural left feel-good approach, we should get back to the basics… get rid of programs like Safe Schools and LGBTQI gender stuff and focus more on literacy and numeracy.”
