Australia’s World Cup campaign came to a disappointing end in Russia this morning.

Peru inflicted a 2-0 defeat in the Socceroos’ last group match, meaning we went without a win from our three games.

It was Peru’s first World Cup finals victory in 40 years.

Regardless, the result wouldn’t have mattered given Denmark held France to a 0-0 draw.

Those two teams go through to the next round, whereas Australia finishes on the bottom of Group C.

Manager Bert van Marwijk’s told SBS his side was still the better of the two teams this morning, despite the loss.

“We don’t have luck in all three games,” he said.

A World Cup hero of previous years, Tim Cahill (pictured) was unleashed for the first time this World Cup but unable to get on the score sheet.

SBS football expert Craig Foster believes the Socceroos could have done more, telling Alan Jones our approach was too cautious and unAustralian.

“We need to come here to World Cups in future and say this is who we are and we’re going to take you on.”
